June, 2010.   The Grand Forks Art Gallery changes its name to: gallery 2  -  Grand Forks and District Art and Heritage Centre

"A rose by any other name is still a rose."

Our name may have changed and our function expanded to include heritage exhibition and outreach programming, but we are still the same Grand Forks Art Gallery Society that has presented more than 450 exhibitions to over 250,000 visitors in the past 25 years.

We are excited about the future and our expanded role in providing an interactive heritage interpretive facility using exhibition, education, and outreach functions to bring to light how past decisions have become our heritage and how our present decisions and actions will become the heritage of future generations of our community.

April, 2007 - Grand Forks Art Gallery and the Court House:
The City of Grand Forks surprised us with an announcement that both the Art Gallery and the Museum were to be moved to the Court House. While the announcement took us by surprise, we are very optimistic that this move will prove to be a positive step forward for the Gallery. There are a tremendous amount of details both philosophical and physical to work through before the move actually takes place.

We applaud the City for taking this step bold forward. It is refreshing, at long last, being recognized as a positive asset to our community. We are extremely grateful to Councilor Robert who has proven to be one of our strongest supporters. If good things come in threes what could possibly be waiting for us around the next corner.

Judith Lloyd, President, Grand Forks Art Gallery Board of Directors.

The Grand Forks Art Gallery and the Boundary Museum are on the move to the Courthouse, a landmark since 1911.

The City of Grand Forks announced in March of that the Art Gallery and the Museum will be sharing this new venue with the move to be completed by October 31, 2008. As the Art Gallery and the Museum share may of the same requirements in regard to conservation and environmental controls, the sharing of this facility will be of benefit to both parties.

Other major advantages include the new visibility and public exposure along with handicap access, which at present is a serious shortcoming for both facilities.

The move is not without its challenges as extensive renovations are required in order to bring the facility up to established art gallery/museum exhibition and collection environmental standards. The Grand Forks Art Gallery Society wishes to ensure that the culturally and historically significant Permanent Collection, which continues to grow in numbers as increase in value, remains a responsibly maintained community legacy.

Moving into the Courthouse will allow for the required technological changes required by both the Art Gallery and the Museum, changes that are neither feasible nor economical in our present locations. Once all renovations are completed the Courthouse will serve the cultural and historical needs of Grand Forks for years to come.

The Grand Forks Art Gallery will be using Jack Shadbolt's End Flight butterfly as a metamorphic symbol of our changes. We hope whenever you see this symbol used in our fundraising events you will be generous in your support

     Community Effort a Success

The campaign to Bring Beverley's Garden Home has been successfully completed. Local and out-of-town residents joined forces in securing Beverley Reid's fabricwork "Le Jardin", ensuring the artwork will return
to our valley after touring as part of the exhibition
Heart of Stone - Heart of Garden. Significant contributions from Charlie Watters and Marjorie McClelland ensured the project's success. A total of $5274 was raised --$3850 covered the purchase price with the additional funds going to the Grand Forks Art Gallery's endowment fund in recognition of the artist.

Beverley Reid is a co-founder of the Grand Forks Art Gallery and she has given countless hours of her time to the regions arts community. She also was the creator of the extraordinary Peace Garden at Hardy View Lodge and kept up with its maintenance for many years.

Beverley and Richard travelled to Grand Forks' sister city Spremberg in Germany where they both will have solo exhibitions at the Niederlausitzer Heidemuseum from April 2-30th, 2006.  The Spremberg area is noted for its textiles. They also plan to visit numerous gardens and museums and galleries in Europe, including the largest printed textile museum in the world located in Mulhouse, France.  Financial assistance from the City of Grand Forks, Area D, Area E, and the Boundary and District Arts Council is graciously acknowledged by the artists, making the trip possible.

"Le Jardin" will be under the care and legal ownership of the Grand Forks Art Gallery in trust of the citizens of Grand Forks. It is hoped that it will eventually be permanently displayed. Anyone who had wanted to
contribute to this campaign is encouraged to make a donation to the endowment fund in recognition of Beverley Reid.

Special thanks is also due to Mary Ann Westaway for her vision and efforts in spearheading this community effort to ensure this important work of art will remain in the public domain for all to enjoy. Visit Beverley's web site.  Further information on these exhibitions in Germany can be found at Richard's web site.

 Did you Know?

The arts and culture sector employs over 63,000 people in communities across BC, with a growth rate three times the provincial average. The film and television industry alone brings in $2.82 billion to our economy. BC artists in all disciplines are recognized internationally as among the best. Each year, our museums, galleries, festivals and performances attract visitors from around the world.

Arts and culture also play an essential role in learning. Participating in arts programs and activities not only provides students with the discipline and creativity to enhance their learning - schools with strong arts programs cite improved attendance and student motivation, renewed community participation, increased graduation rates and higher scores on standardized tests - but also gives them a strong foundation for enriching their lives.
